Somaliland 1903-04

Since 1900 the British Protectorate of Somaliland, on the coast east of the Soudan, had been disturbed by the operations of a fanatical leader known as the Mad Mullah, and it was decided to send reinforcements from South Africa. These included a company of Boer Mounted Infantry and one of British, the latter consisting entirely of 60th Riflemen from the 25th Mounted Infantry at Harrismith. The Company was commanded by Captain G. C. Shakerley, with six other officers of the Regiment. They arrived in January, 1903. After long and trying operations in waterless country the Mullah was brought to battle at Jidballi on 10th January, 1904, and his force destroyed. Major Shakerley and two other 60th officers were wounded.
