Rohilkund 1858
In the following year the 1st Battalion formed the part of the Roorkee Field Force under Jones, now promoted BrigadierGeneral, which operated against the rebels from 11th April until 24th May, 1858. During this campaign Jones's force swept through the whole province of Rohilkund from north to south; fought one battle (Nugeenah 21st April); defeated the enemy in three actions (Bagawalla, 17th April; Bareilly, 3rd May; and Dojura, 5th May); assaulted and captured one city (Bareilly 6th May) and relieved two others (Moradabad, 18th April, and Shahjehanpore, 11th May) and took thirty-seven guns. It was said of the gallant Jones that "he never assaulted a position he did not take, nor attacked a gun that he did not capture."
Rifleman V. Bambrick gained the Victoria Cross at Bareilly on 6th May.
