Died: 1 April 1864, Suicide by hanging in Pentonville Prison.
Buried: St Pancras' and Islington Cemetery, Finchley, North London. Plot LL/G. Common 3731.

Enlisted: 12 April 1853 - 60th Rifles
1860 - 87th Foot - 1st Battalion Victoria's (The Royal Irish Fusiliers).

CITATION

For conspicuous bravery at Bareilly, on 6th May 1858, when in a serai he was attacked by three Ghazees, one of whom he cut down. He was wounded twice on this occasion.

Gazetted: 24 December 1858.
Investiture: GOC Div, India 1859.
Other Medals: Indian Mutiny.
Location of Medals: VC returned to War Office.

Personal: He was invested with the medal by the General Officer Commanding his Division in India in 1859. In 1860 he transferred to the 87th Foot. In 1863 he was convicted of Assault, and theft of Medals and was the first man to forfeit his Victoria Cross under Royal Warrant, 3 March 1863.

Commemoration: A plaque allegedly existed in Pentonville Prison.
